Notes on the Guitar

Learning the Notes on the Guitar with Octaves

An Octave is double (or half) the pitch of a note, either higher or lower.

Use only the 1st and 4th fingers.

Use alternate picking, down, up, down, up, etc.

Use the dots/inlays on the guitar fret-board and neck to help you memorize the notes. The purpose of the dots is for finger positioning markers.

Say the notes when you play them, this can also be good singing practice if you want. Play the note, then try and match the pitch with your voice.

D|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---0-------2--------3--------5---------7---------8-------10-------12---|
E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|

TIP: Remember this "Skip a string and go up a step." If you start on say the 3rd Fret on the 6th String it is the note G. Now if you skip the next string, go to the 4th string and count up two frets (a whole step) you will also have a G note but an octave higher.
