The first step in learning the guitar fretboard,
should be to learn the names of all the open (unfretted) strings.

or maybe...
Elephants And Dogs Grow Big Ears
After the open strings, move on to learning the notes on the 6th (thickest) string, the "Low E".
Then learn the notes on the 5th (A) string.
Tip:
Remember these notes are always side by side with no frets in between:
BC - EF
Dont worry about the sharps (# ) and flats for now, or trying to memorize everything, just focus on learning one string at a time. Just Remember: B & C are together, and E & F are together. There is a fret between all the other notes.
